With the fall 2010 semester now underway, hundreds of GCC history students are now preparing to fan out across the GLOW region to work with historical societies, museums, cemetery associations – and the like – in order to complete service learning requirements.
Service learning offers students the opportunity to gain an understanding of how a knowledge of history, and the skills of the historian, are relevant in the real world. Students are partnered with history agencies and organizations in the four country area served by GCC. Over the course of their partnership, students work on projects that benefit their host. This may include cataloging artifacts, creating databases for historical records, cemetery restoration projects and much more. Items long on the “to do” lists of historical organizations may now be realized with student help.
