Genesee County History Open House Celebrated at GCC

Genesee County History Open House Celebrated at GCC Historical Societies, Museums, Historical Organizations and Officially Appointed Local Government Historians Coming Together for First-Ever Event

Batavia, NY- Local historical societies, museums, historical organizations and officially appointed local government historians along with regional history buffs are coming together on one day, under one roof with one collaborative objective – to actively demonstrate the relevancy that our past has on our present and our future. On Saturday, April 6, 2013 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Genesee Community College will be hosting the first Genesee County History Open House, which is sponsored by Genesee County Federation of Historical Agencies and the GCC History Co-op. Nearly a dozen agencies are participating in the first-ever event, which is free and open to the public.

“Collectively, all history agencies share the common denominator that an appreciation and awareness of past events plays an vital role in today’s society and is very relevant to our contemporary culture,” Derek Maxfield, GCC history instructor and the College’s historian-in-residence said. “This event will help us restore an appreciation for local history and the impact it makes on our region and community.”

Among the participating agencies are: Alabama History Center, Alexander Museum, Town of Batavia, Village of Bergen, Town of Bethany, Town of Darien, Elba Historical Society, Friends of the Batavia Peace Garden, Genesee Area Genealogists, Genesee Valley Civil War Round Table, Genesee County History Department, Historical Batavia Cemetery, Holland Land Office, Kellogg Company (Genesee County Militia), LeRoy Historical Society and Jell-O Museum, Oakfield Historical Society and Research Center, Town of Pembroke and the Village of Corfu, Stafford Museum and Historical Society.

Along with various displays and exhibits from each agency, there will be short presentations and videos, Civil War music and a small War of 1812 Militia Encampment will be on the east lawn of the Batavia Campus. There will also be door prizes featuring many items of interest through the ages.

The Genesee County Federation of Historical Agencies is dedicated to the promotion, research, interpretation and preservation of history relating to Genesee County, New York. The goal of this organization is to encourage the betterment of promoting local history and to improve communication among historical organizations within Genesee County. Susan Conklin, the Executive Chair of the Federation and County Historian along with the Board of the Federation invites you to our first Open House and to explore the wealth of local history. This event is free and will be of interest to all ages.

The three-day Civil War encampment Friday, April 26 through Sunday, April 28 at GCC’s Medina Campus Center which will feature a parade through Medina, re-enactors in authentic soldier costumes setting up Union and Confederate camps, several mock battles, a Victorian Cotillion, many other events and opportunities throughout the weekend.
